Officer and Gentleman

As parents we can only do so much.
We can lead our kids to water.
But we can’t make them shower.
As one of about a dozen chaperones on this trip.
For 70 or so kids.
We are doing our best.
But there comes a time when we need to call in the authorities.
In this case, the time is 10p to 6a.
And the authorities are an overnight security company.
There’s nothing wrong here.
But we’ve hired this security company to walk the halls.
To make sure nothing goes wrong.
Most of these kids are 13 or 14.
And 13 or 14 year olds are very good at finding trouble.
Maybe not REAL trouble.
But trouble.
So we’ve established rules.
Well, A rule.
No leaving your room after 10 O’Clock!
Period.
And that’s where the authorities comes in.
I was in the lobby tonight when the rent-a-cop arrived.
He introduced himself as “officer”.
Now that’s setting the proper tone.
He then went through his resume.
Just turned 20.
College student.
Major in criminal justice.
Volunteer fire fighter.
Starting at the Police Academy in the fall.
Jackpot.
As if it couldn’t get any better.

It did.

He told us his name.
John.
John Kennedy.
The third.
Seriously.
Only in Washington.
